Taking weight off the roof: renovation of the Air France hangar in Roissy CDG

Sometimes renovations can be more challenging than new builds. This is especially the case when you’re operating in an area with safety restrictions and with no possibility of closing down the building for the duration of the works. If you add 25,000 m2 of roof surface to the equation, it’s clear that the chosen solution must enable a fast and agile way of working. For the maintenance hangar of Air France at the Charles de Gaulle airport, EPDM was the solution.

Roofing membrane

Firestone RubberGard EPDM 1.1 mm

The 40-year old bituminous roofing system suffered from leaks, poor insulation and deformation. It also no longer met the safety requirements. On top of that, the two layers of bituminous roofing membrane were a heavy weight to carry for the steel construction of this exceptional building. Under a sky full of airplanes, the team began the renovation works, removing about 720 m2 of the old roofing system each day and replacing it with the lightweight, single-ply RubberGardTM EPDM 1.1 mm roofing membrane from Firestone.

The video documents the impressive six-month makeover process that made it possible to meet the strict safety requirements, increase the thermal resistance of the building by a factor of twenty, and reduce the load on the roof by 75%. All this while maintaining round-the-clock working operations during the installation of the new roofing system.

There is a lot to
discover about EPDM

EPDM is the most future-proof roofing solution when it comes to sustainabilityperformance and design freedom. Learn more about the role it played within this project and many others by discovering its benefits.

How did EPDM elevate this project?

PERFECT FOR RENOVATIONS

EPDM can be installed directly on most existing roofing systems, with or without insulation. Since it’s safe and flame-free, many renovations can happen without closing the building underneath.

QUICK INSTALLATION

Installing EPDM is fast, flame-free and safe for people and the environment. When it comes to large roof surfaces and irregular shapes and forms, EPDM ensures a swift and easy installation process.

Layers of functionality

A flat or low slope roof assembly consists of several components that need to work together efficiently and consistently to offer a long-term, sustainable solution. While the roofing membrane is often the top and therefore most visible layer, what lies under it has a significant impact on the overall roof performance. Choosing the right materials (and ensuring their proper installation) is what makes a roof stand the test of time and be ready for the challenges of the future.
